Windows App Help
The Mix the Mix app for Windows sends your audio to your listeners. This page covers installing it, using it, updating it, uninstalling it, and getting help. You get the app from Get the App.
The app comes from the Microsoft Store. It is not in the Store yet: Get the App says when it is. The Store checks and updates it for you.
Installing the App
The App Needs WebView2
What you see. The installer stops while it gets Microsoft Edge WebView2, or the app does not open after installing.
Why. The app's window is drawn by Microsoft Edge WebView2, a part of Windows, so the app needs Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11. Windows 11 has WebView2, and so do most computers with Windows 10. If it is missing, the installer adds it by itself, so the computer needs the internet while it installs. It is not inside the installer.
What to do.
- Connect to the internet and run the installer again.
- If that still fails, or the computer has no internet: on any computer with the internet, download the Evergreen Standalone Installer for WebView2 (x64) from Microsoft's WebView2 page, developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-edge/webview2.
- Copy it to this computer, run it, then run the Mix the Mix installer again.
Who the App Is Installed For
The app is always installed for you alone, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mix the Mix. Windows does not ask for
administrator permission, and other people's Windows accounts on the computer do not see it.
Its settings and your saved key are kept in %APPDATA%\com.mixthemix.streamer, for your Windows account
only. The key is encrypted by Windows for your account, so someone else on the same computer cannot broadcast
as you. Anyone else who wants to broadcast from this computer installs it in their own Windows account.
Using the App
Signing In to the App
How it works. Press Sign In in the app. It opens the Mix the Mix sign-in page in your browser; sign in there in any way it offers. The page then asks Sign In to the App?: pick the broadcaster profile if you have more than one, and press Sign In to the App. Your browser opens the app, which asks to connect: press Connect. The app never sees your password. Connect the App on your Account page does the same from the site.
A question you did not expect. If the site asks "Sign In to the App?", or the app asks to connect, when you did not just press Sign In or Connect the App yourself, press Cancel. The app only connects through a Sign In it started, so a link someone else sends you cannot connect it to their account.
A link from somewhere else. The app only acts on the link from a Sign In you pressed in it in the last 30 minutes, without quitting the app in between. Any other connect link changes nothing: the app says so in its window, without coming to the front if it is already open. The Connect the App link is not one of these: it only makes the app start its own Sign In in your browser. While you are broadcasting, even a link from your own Sign In does not bring the app to the front; open it from the taskbar or the tray to answer.
Nothing happened. One of these:
- Your browser asked "Open Mix the Mix?" ("https://mixthemix.com wants to open this application.") and it was closed or cancelled. Leave the box "Always allow mixthemix.com to open links of this type in the associated app" ticked so it does not ask again.
- The app is not installed on this computer, or not in this Windows account. The installer tells Windows that Mix the Mix opens these links, for your account only.
- You are using a copy of the app that was not installed with the installer, so Windows does not know which app opens Mix the Mix links.
What to do.
- Press Open the Mix the Mix App on the page, and look near the browser's address bar for its question. Select Open Mix the Mix.
- If the app is not installed, install it from Get the App, then try again.
- If you use a copy that was not installed, install it with the installer instead, or paste a key in as below.
Or paste a key into the app yourself.
- On your Account page (Sign In first), under Broadcaster Key, open Replace the Key and make a new key. Any other computer using the old key stops broadcasting.
- Copy it with the copy icon next to it. The key itself is never on screen, only dots, and it can be copied only while that page is open.
- In the app, open Sign In, then Advanced, press Paste a Key Instead, paste it, then press Start. The site checks it first: a key it refuses never replaces the one already saved.
Paste the key only into the app. Never into a chat or a message, and never on stream.
An App Has No Sound
What you see. The app opens, but an app you want to send is not in its list, or never shows the copper dot that means it is playing sound.
What to do.
- Make sure the other app is open and playing sound, then press Refresh in the Mix the Mix app.
- If you started the other app as administrator (for example, a game set to "Run as administrator"), Windows does not let Mix the Mix hear it. Start that app the normal way.
- Some apps and audio devices take a device for themselves (exclusive mode), so nothing else can hear it. Open Sound settings, then More sound settings, choose the device, select Properties, then Advanced, and untick Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
Opening the App Again Shows the Same Window
Only one copy of the app runs at a time, so opening it again brings back the window that is already open. Closing the window does not quit the app: it keeps running, and keeps broadcasting, in the tray by the clock.
To quit for real.
- Find the Mix the Mix icon in the tray, by the clock. It may be behind the small arrow that shows hidden icons.
- Right-click it and choose Quit. While you are broadcasting it asks "Stop broadcasting and quit?" first; Yes stops the broadcast and quits.
To stop the broadcast and keep the app running, choose Stop Broadcasting in the same menu. Left-clicking the icon opens the window.
Updating the App
The Microsoft Store updates the app for you. Your settings and your saved key are kept.
- Quit the app: right-click its tray icon and choose Quit.
- Update it from the Microsoft Store, or press Download the New Version if the app shows it.
Uninstalling the App
- On a computer other people use, first open the app's Broadcaster Key and press Forget the Key. It works only while you are not broadcasting.
- Quit the app: right-click its tray icon and choose Quit.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps (on Windows 10: Apps & features). Find Mix the Mix, and choose Uninstall.
- The uninstaller has a box, Delete my settings and saved broadcaster key. Leave it unticked to keep your settings and your saved broadcaster key for a reinstall. When you are uninstalling for good, tick it: the key is only removed if the box is ticked.
Uninstalling also tells Windows that Mix the Mix no longer opens Connect the App links. Left unticked, the
settings stay in %APPDATA%\com.mixthemix.streamer.
If you think someone else has your key, replace it on your Account page : the old one stops working at once.
Getting Help
Still stuck? Contact support.
To help us help you quickly, include:
- The app's version: in Settings, Apps, Installed apps, it is under Mix the Mix.
- Your Windows version: press Windows + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - The app's status line, the words under its Start button, exactly as they are.
- Which section of this page you tried, and what happened.
Never send or show anyone your broadcaster key, not in a message, a screenshot, or on stream. Support will never ask for it. The site and the app never show it either.
